With more than 3.5 million professional truck drivers on the road today, the men and women of the trucking industry work one of the most demanding jobs in America. These individuals are responsible for delivering our goods safely, securely and on time.
Port Houston, along with Gulf Winds International and its More Than the Move Foundation, teamed up to celebrate this year’s National Truck Driver Appreciation Week (Sept. 8-14) to show appreciation for their services.
Team members from both Port Houston and Gulf Winds International surprised the truck drivers at the Bayport Container Terminal with homemade breakfast tacos and cold water as they exited the facilities.
“This week was a perfect opportunity to recognize our partners in the trucking industry and say thank you to those who help drive our economy,” said Garret Berg, manager of community relations and events for Port Houston. “These men and women are always on the move, so we were glad for the chance to catch them and let them know that they are appreciated.” More Than the Move Foundation is the nonprofit arm of Gulf Winds International, a local logistics and drayage company based in Houston.

Port Commissioners gather at July public meeting.
The planned expansion of the truck gate at Port Houston’s Barbours Cut Container Terminal is set
to begin after approval of a contract for the work by the Port Commission.
The project consists of about 23 acres of new pavement at the existing Barbours Cut Terminal.
Major components of work include demolition of existing pavement and structures, new
pavement, construction of two new building and new electrical, drainage and utilities.
The Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority awarded a contract not to exceed $39.7
million to Archer Western Construction, the top-ranked proposer among four finalists. A total of 53
companies downloaded materials about the project.
Container volume overall at Port Houston continues to break records, up 12 percent for the year
compared to last year, Executive Director Roger Guenther told the Port Commission during its
meeting. Port Houston facilities have handled nearly 1.5 Million TEUs through the first half of 2019.

The Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority has authorized an interlocal agreement with Harris County to receive environmental grant funding under the Harris County Local Initiative Project at a public meeting Dec. 12.
The project is funded by the Texas Commission for Environmental Quality, obligating the port to provide equal matching funds towards the program.
The grant funding furthers the efforts of the port’s Clean Air Strategy Plan in achieving its local match to reduce diesel air emissions due to port-related activities.
The project will help eliminate approximately 12,000 kilograms of nitrogen oxide and other emissions.
Port Houston’s Clean Air Strategy Plan strives to reduce real and sustainable maritime and port-related emissions. The multi-source, multi-pollutant program has found economically feasible ways and means to achieve emission reductions throughout the port area.
The grant will assist in the purchase of 528 industrial outlets, which will be installed in a location where refrigeration (reefer) trucks park.
