RADM Tim Gallaudet, Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and Acting Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere, met with Port Houston staff Jan. 11 at the port\u2019s executive building.<\/p>\n

Port staff, industry stakeholders and NOAA representatives discussed how the port uses NOAA's products, services and partnerships to further improve Galveston Bay's ecosystem and navigation safety to support the nation's economy and environment.<\/p>\n
Gallaudet was previously a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy, where his most recent assignment was Oceanographer of the Navy and Commander of the Navy Meteorology and Oceanography Command.<\/p>\n
From daily weather forecasts, severe storm warnings, and climate monitoring to fisheries management, coastal restoration and supporting marine commerce, NOAA\u2019s products and services support economic vitality and affect more than one-third of America\u2019s gross domestic product.<\/p>\n
Port Houston management provided an overview of the greater Port of Houston highlighting its economic impact to the nation. Topics such as channel development, environmental stewardship, navigational safety and Hurricane Harvey response efforts were also covered.<\/p>\n
Port Houston is the local sponsor of the Houston Ship Channel and uses real-time oceanographic and hydrographic data to further support the navigational needs of the waterway.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
