The group held its annual election for several terms on the board and had a visit from Rear Admiral David Callahan of the 8<sup>th<\/sup> U.S. Coast Guard District.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Port of Houston fire fighters, tug boat captains from G&H Towing and two veteran Houston Pilots, Capt. Michael McGee and Capt. Michael Phillips, were honored with Meritorious Public Service Awards\u00a0presented by the U.S. Coast Guard during the February 10 meeting of the Lone Star Harbor Safety Committee for their heroic actions in preventing disaster during the M\/T Aframax River allision and fire on the Houston Ship Channel,\u00a0September 6, 2016.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Coast Guard VTS Director for Sector Houston-Galveston, Steve Nerheim, provided his annual state of the waterways presentation, while Lone Star committee chairs provided and overview and quarterly updates of their subcommittee and working group efforts, which range from navigation operations and dredging to maritime education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t thank you all enough for what you do for this committee and for our port community,\u201d James Prazak of Tricon Energy, Ltd., chairman of the Lone Star Harbor Safety Committee, told the members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are many exciting things that we are working on this year as an organization. We have some challenges ahead, but we have a great team of volunteers and agency partners who will be tackling those head-on,\u201d added Prazak.<\/p>\n<p>The Lone Star Harbor Safety Committee (LSHSC) provides a public forum to address Marine Transportation System (MTS) issues with particular emphasis on navigation safety-related matters involving the ports of Houston, Galveston, Texas City and Freeport.
